Mannheim car auction in Colchester has one day a week sale of 3 year old Mercedes at the end of their leases. I bought a E350 coupe with 30,000 miles on the clock, obviously a full service history. Like buying a new car, £19k.

Many years back I had to visit an Army barracks in Aldershot.
Bit embarrassing when the guard on the gate asked me to open my bonnet and I didn't know where the lever was, or that you had to pull it twice.
Talk about reinforcing the numpty company car driver stereotype...

Fleet cars might be well serviced but I used to thrash my company cars.
Sent the car to the garage as the engine was knocking.
They asked if I ever put any oil in it.

Bought a few, in Liverpool Manchester and London. You’ll see the same face there all the time, people know what they’re doing. If you’re buying for yourself rather than to sell on you can outbid regular buyers and still make a saving.

Glasses guides address can probably be found in an old copy of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, although you may need an old A to Z.

This would have been about 30 years ago so hopefully that particular car was turned into baked bean tins a long time ago.
My youngest has just passed his driving test, so going to have to reaquaint myself with the world of 'cars with a history' so could be back there again!

Chelmsford auctions were pretty good I've had a couple of cars from there , can get some bargains if you're lucky . Take someone with you who knows their cars if you can and have some idea of the book price for the car you are after, most important of all don't get involved in a bidding war and end up going over your budget

If you sign up to an account with BCA you can see all cars in upcoming auctions and even bid online You are covered now as the majority of them will have a bca report on them and that will pinpoint any problems including small damage etc If you buy it and it has a problem not reported u are covered by the same legal rights u would have buying from a dealer
If you know anyone with a traders account you will pay less commission

Any up to date car auction will hold up a red card over the car if it has engine problems or the red light is on.

Don't go on a buying trip pissed is my advice.
Went to the one near Camberley on New Year's Day many years ago with Mrs Bungo and friend who we mistakenly thought knew about cars.
Came away with an Opel Manta that looked nice, but went into self-destruct mode the moment it had four wheels off the premises.
Money pit doesn't even start to describe it...
